Questions About How To Insert A Tampon Without Pain

Mandy asks…

How to insert a tampon without pain?

I tried a tampon a few times. I had one on and it hurt so much i took it out. Every time i try it hurts so much to try? I tried those light ones and same thing. What should I do?

admin answers:

When i first used a tampon..it was kind a difficult at first because i was stressing about getting up there.

First u need to relax your vaginal muscles..and breath..then if it helps you can squat and then insert until your fingers touch your body..or until u cant feel it.

The reason why it may hurt is because your mind is focused on pain..its all in your mind just RELAX and dont think about it.

Hope That helps!

Helen asks…

How do you insert a tampon without pain?

I'm sexually active with my boyfriend, so I'm not a virgin and my hymen is broken.
I feel like I've tried everything with tampons, I try and use the absolute smallest ones, tried using an applicator, tried all different positions, and it still hurts so much!
I'm going to a tropical resort in a couple of weeks and I'll have my period then!
Could I practice while I don't have my period?
How do I do this? Any tips?
It's so frustrating! I've been trying for a year.

HELP!

admin answers:

Try using a bit of lubricant, vaseline or saliva even to help it slide in, use a mirror and make sure you are definitely pushing it on towards your back.
As for practicing when you're not on your period, you should never do this, you put your self at risk of getting TSS, because they are absorbent they will dry out the walls of your vagina and possibly stick, then tear the walls of your vagina when you take it out, which is also why you should never use heavier flow tampons then you need, or take one out too soon, it needs to be 'full' of blood to come out easily.

Betty asks…

Can you ever forget how to insert a tampon?

I've inserted a tampon correctly without any pain 3 times and after my period's over, is possible to forget how to insert it? Or do you always remember it, like riding a bike? Thanks so much!!

admin answers:

It is pretty hard to forget. You just stick it in at a angel then push it in easy!

Charles asks…

How to insert a tampon properly?

when I try and insert a tampon I start to feel pressure and pain.. am I inserting on a bad angle?

well I got it in no troubles one time, and couldn't even feel it, for about 3 hours, but taking it out hurt like hell... why did it hurt so much?

How do I insert it without hurting so much when I take it out?
Why do I feel pain/pressure?

admin answers:

1. Relax! Try not to worry about inserting the tampon right the first time. If you are tense it will make insertion harder.
2. The best time to practice inserting a tampon is during the heavy part of your period. The tampon should glide inside your vagina easily without any discomfort.
3. Decide if you prefer to insert the tampon standing or sitting. If sitting is your preference, sit on the toilet. If you want to try standing, putting one foot on the bathtub helps.
4. Hold the tampon applicator in your right hand if you are right-handed, or left if left-handed.
5. Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the bottom of the larger, outer tube.
6. Point the tip of the applicator toward your vagina, facing slightly towards the back. The smaller tube should be pointed away from your body.
7. Use your other hand to open your vagina.
8. Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of your vagina.
9. Gently push the smaller end of the applicator in until it is completely inside the larger outer tube. This pushes the tampon into your vagina and out of the tube.
10. With your thumb and middle finger still on the outer tube, release the smaller tube and let the strings dangle freely.
11. Gently pull the two tubes out together.
12. Dispose of the applicator according to the manufacturer's instructions.
13. When you are ready to remove the tampon, gently pull the withdrawal strings down and forward. The used tampon may be flushed down the toilet.

Tips:

1. Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon with a water-based lubricant such as K-Y Jelly can make insertion easier the first few times. Don't use petroleum jelly.
2. Always read the manufacture's instructions thoroughly before using any type of tampon.
3. If the tampon feels uncomfortable it is probably not inserted far enough into your vagina. Try again with a new tampon.

What You Need:

* Tampons
* water-based lubricant

George asks…

I'm having Tampon troubles?

It's summer and i have never used tampons before and tomorrow my friend has invited me over to swim at her pool and go to the beach. I'm really scared about using one but i don't know how to tell my friend or an excuse to make. What can i do? how do i insert a tampon without pain, easily? How long does it take to do it correctly? Thanks :D

admin answers:

Its summer here too. =) Just read the packet a few times and make sure you aren't going to be disturbed by anyone while inserting it. Follow the instructions carefully (wash your hands beforehand). It may help putting one foot on the side of the bath or loo seat while inserting. If it doesn't feel comfortable the first time, remove it and start again. Don't rush, it is important that this is done in your own time. If it doesn't work out for you, don't feel pressured to just go as is because a tampon that isn't inserted properly can be painful and dangerous. Good luck honey xxxx and remember- relax and don't rush. =)

Donna asks…

How to insert a tampon correctly?

How do i insert it in correctly allowing it to glide in easily and painless like everyone says? it's soo hardd . ugh i get soo frustrated.

admin answers:

This is going to sound really gross----
spread ur legs to shoulder width apart, (no undies on btw :P) and kinda jimmy it in, put the plastic part as far as you can without ur fingers touching ur vag, and then push the stick at the bottom to insert it.
Srry if thats gross

Lizzie asks…

How do you insert a tampon Correctly?

I have read the instructions and tried several times using a mirror and in various positions. After opening the opening I put the tampon in and push gently. It goes no where. Am I just scared or am I puttng it at the wrong angle? All the sites I've looked at don't explain the step between placing it to the opening and pushing it in. Totally confused. Please help x

admin answers:

Are you sure you're using the right tampon? If your hymen is still intact you might prefer the smallest tampons.

Make sure you're pushing it the right angle, generally, you have to push up slightly towards your bum rather than pushing it up in a straight line.

Also, remember that at the entrance of your vagina there's a tight ring of muscles that somewhat "lock" it. If you push a little past that point you will feel it sliding in without problems. Then, just push until you feel comfortable.

Maria asks…

how do you insert a tampon correctly so it doesnt hurt when you sit down?

and you know where theres the grip....does the grip hav to go in your vagina in order to put it in all the way...or do u just stop and dnt put the grip in?

admin answers:

No. Your fingers hold it at the grip, you insert it inside your body and stop when your fingers (on the grip) are just outside your vagina. Then you push the smaller tube inside the larger tube and you should be good. If you do it like this, the bottom end of the tampon will be a couple inches up inside you, and the string should hang out a couple inches. If you are pushing in the applicator and it hits something and stops, that is your cervix. Do not push any farther up. Instead, just push the tampon out of the applicator at that point without pushing it up (you might have to pull the applicator down some).

Daniel asks…

how do you insert a tampon correctly?

i just tryed to insert a tampon for the fisrt time and it wouldnt go in. i tryed slowly for about 5mins and it wouldnt go in. it was painfull too.
i followed the instructiion, tryed it just standing and also with one foot up, and it wouldnt go in.

admin answers:

Check out this video - http://www.plannedparenthood.org/teen-talk/watch/period-how-use-pad-tampon-cup-26793.htm and if you're not sure where your vaginal opening is then look at this page - http://www.scarleteen.com/article/body/anatomy_pink_parts_female_sexual_anatomy

Wash hands first then get into a comfortable position and relax. Unwrap the tampon making sure the string hangs down, hold the tampon in one hand while you hold your labia open with your other hand. If using a non-applicator tampon then insert as far as it'll go, aiming towards the bottom of your back - don't be scared of touching your vagina, it's yours and both your vagina and menstrual flow is very clean. If using an applicator tampon insert the outer tube into your vagina as far as it'll go, then use your index finger to push the inner tube through the outer tube to push the tampon into your vagina, once the inner tube is all the way in remove the applicator. If you feel pain as you move the tampon isn't in far enough so remove and try again later with a fresh tampon. To remove pull strings gently but firmly, wrap up and bin - never flush!

To make insertion easier use lowest absorbency which are smaller, and cotton tampons like Cottons or Natracare which are softer so easier to insert, they're also safer than brands like Tampax, you may also want to use non-applicator as they give you more control and have less waste. Insert during heavy flow, if you need to use lubrication such as KY jelly or olive oil, you may want to masturbate as when aroused your vagina becomes larger, relaxed and lubricated so making insertion easier. Take a spare tampon and practice using your closed fist to represent your vagina, don't use that same tampon in your vagina, instead pop it into water then you can see how it works inside your body too.

If you have problems don't panic, just try again another time or use something else, there are plenty of other options many of which are better than tampons so no reason to get stressed with tampons. I'd recommend menstrual cups, these are healthier and more hygienic than tampons, they are also easier to use, more convenient and more reliable than tampons as they can be worn any time up to 12 hours without leaking. If you want to learn more see here - http://www.scarleteen.com/article/advice/what_are_menstrual_cups

Remember to avoid TSS and vaginal infections it's important to stay hygienic by changing tampons every 4-6 hours and alternate between tampons and pads. Always use lowest absorbency and don't use tampons before your period, with light flow, overnight or when you have a vaginal infection. See the tampon health web site http://www.spotsite.org and the TSS information site http://www.toxicshock.com for more information.

Lisa asks…

How do you insert a tampon correctly without it hurting?

im going swimming tomorrow and i really really dont want to miss out, ive tried using them before but it hurts

admin answers:

Heya,
There is many things that can make it hurt, try using a slender tampon with a plastic applicator ( i higly recommend this for beginners), also before you insert it make sure you are relaxed and calm if you are tense this can also make it hurt, and also the best best tip i can give you is get hold of some KY Jelly and put a tiny bit on the top of the tampon and then it should slide right in without it hurting. If you cant get it in though there is nothing wrong with you its just practise makes perfect, if you cant get it in though ( which i think you will) you wont be able to go swimming you dont have to tell your friends the real reason just say you dont feel very well, if there your true friends they should understand. Hope i helped and good luck

Questions About How To Insert A Tampon With Pictures

Linda asks…

Need help inserting a tampon (on vacation and I dont know how)?

Okay, so I'm on vacation, and I know how to insert a tampon. So I don't need a how-to guide. I need help knowing WHERE it goes. Even though there's pictures they don't help because it still doesn't show exactly where it's inserted. I just can't figure this out, and I'm beginning to become upset and I know I should be trying not to get frustrated since this is the first time I've ever tried using it (not being at home doesn't help). I feel like a dork asking, but I need help and my mom isn't on vacation with me so I don't have her to talk to... I looked at a few sites, even that beinggirl site, but even that didn't help me much becuase it mainly only said what there is (urethra, vagina etc.) not where they are.
I'm not worried that I can't do it. I just need more help on how. I mean tons of girls do this every day. I'm 15... and incredibly short, but I don't see how that changes anything... unless height matters? I don't just want to give up, I just want more advice. I tried, and it was incredibly uncomfortable, which makes me think I didn't do it right. I'm not afraid of doing it, just unsure.

admin answers:

If your having troubles, try Playtex sport. Most girls that have trouble resort back to pads but if you have never tried tampons before just research more online. Also check out this link

http://www.playtexgentleglide.com/Insertion_Instructions.html

It works for ones with a applicator, wich are preferablally the best!

Daniel asks…

inserting first tampon?

I am 13 now, got my first period not long ago, and I was using pads. But I am in the swim team of my school and so far I haven't miss any tryouts, but who canstick ede that I will never. I tried the thinnest tampons (without applicator, OB tampons) and it doesn't seemed to work. I tried many, like 5 and still not working. So..I sorta looked in to the mirror while lying on my bed and openning my legs, and I don't see a big black hole( vagina openning) like in many picture. if i didn't look at the wrong place, i only saw a tiny point of a openning in a big openning. if i have a closed hymen, then my blood wouldn't come out in the previous periods, so if i have a really tight hymen, can I still use tampons?( my mom bought the ones with applicators, she said it's easier with an applicator)
and are there any tips about how to insert a tampon easier with a tight hymen? does K-Y jelly really helps?

admin answers:

If your hymen is really that shut, with only a small opening, you have to use something small on one end and tapering up to thicker . Coat with K-Y jelly and Inset it into hole and push slowly and gently. The hymen should stretch. Sorry but this MAY tear the hymen. You have to make the decision whether or not to try this and risk tearing the hymen. Sorry but it may come down to not swimming during period or "Deflowering yourself" Yourself....

Michael asks…

How is it possible to have intercourse with the Instead Cup inserted inside?!?

Hi, I've been looking around about having intercourse when a girls on her cycle. Some girls said they use the Instead Cup but looking at the pictures of this alt. tampon/pad wouldn't the guys package move it further; therefore, causing a medical problem?

Also, if you have used the Instead Cup is it comfortable and easy to put in? I'm a rare woman who hasn't used a tampon ever.

Thanks in advance !

admin answers:

The Instead cup is shaped like a diphragm, and cups over the cervix (this is how it catches the menstrual flow). The vaginal vault ends with the cervix, so that is where the cup goes, and it can't go any further, so your partner couldn't possibly push it any further into your vagina so there is no need to worry about medical complications.

The cup is easy enough to insert but it takes practice, and a total comfort with your own body (not to mention not getting freaked out by touching menstrual blood), as well as KNOWING your own anatomy because you need to know how your body is built in order to get the cup in place properly.

Lizzie asks…

Can you help me with tampons?

I'm 13 and I've had my period for about 8 months. I am going to the water park in a few hours and I need to know how to insert a tampon. My mom and I are very open with each other, so would it be weird if she stayed outside the door and guided me through the process? Also it would be helpful if I could see some pictures of it, and this is my first time and I'm scared.
Thanks for all the help:)♥

admin answers:

I would ask your mom to show you how to do it while you're still in the house.

When I had my second period, we went to a waterpark, and thats when I started using tamps.

Um, I know this is kinda a weird question, but do you know where exactly youre vajayjay is? Cause I didn't know exactly where the exact hole was till after I started my period.

Pretty much, you have to relax. If your muscles are all tight, it'll be hard to get in. WASH YOUR HANDS, before and after. Even if it does look weird washing your hands before going into the stall. Sit on the toilet, take some deep breaths, and just push it in.
I actually get some toilet paper and wrap it around my finger and wipe around "in there" to get rid of some of the blood. You don't have to do this, its been about a year and a half since mine started and I just recently started doing this.
There are probably pictures of it on the internet.
Don't leave the tamp in for more than 8 hours under any circumstances!!!! You could get a deadly rare infection. Don't get paranoid, as long as you wash your hands and take out the tamp before 8 hours are over, you won't get TSS.

And just so you know, every woman using tamps was just as scared as you are, and just as clueless as you are probably feeling.
But honestly, I forgot it was in there after a few minutes in the water. Have fun!

But one thing, if you're using a tampon with a string, be sure to check that the string is inside your bathing suit. It's super embarrassing if theres a string hanging down your leg, and some random girl your age tells you about it.

David asks…

Ladies!! What should I do about my period?

I'm in 7th grade & I started my fifth period last night. We have a swimming unit in PE & I haven't used tampons before. Tomorrow is really important because we have a 14 minute swim & it's the fourth to the last day (we were planning on doing other things for the rest of the unit, so I kinda have to swim). My mom is on a trip & she won't be coming back for about another three weeks. I don't have any older sisters or cousins that can help me.

The ones I found didn't have an applicator & are a little smaller than my thumb. They are o.b. regular flow. My mom also had tampons with a cardboard applicator, but I was told they are harder to use, & they are of a higher absorbency. I had another ONE from this sample kit they gave us at school, & it is regular flow with a plastic applicator. I'm kinda scared to use that one because it looks.. big. If I were to use the one with an applicator, I was going to wear it tomorrow because if it is easier, it would be better to wear in the pool.

I basically want to know EVERYTHING about inserting tampons. Here are some of the questions I have (I know some of them sound kinda weird, but it would be really great if you could help me with this):

How do you insert a tampon without an applicator?
• If I were to insert the tampon with the plastic applicator, how should I do it?
• Which.. hole do you put it in? If there's even.. a picture, I'd appreciate it.
• When (before I jump into the water) should I put it in & take it out?
• Which brand is best for you?
• Would it be good to wear board shorts with my swimsuit?

I know it's a lot to ask, but if you could tell me as much as you know, I'd appreciate it. I know I probably should use a pad, but this is a case where I want to use a tampon. Best answer gets ten points!! & You'd really be helping me out. Thanks (:
This is my first time, but I have to start sometime & I really want to go for it. If you could still answer my questions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

admin answers:

Ok best brand for me is tampax pearl plastic aplactors are easier to use and there is a nice way and some info about tampons on www.beinggirl.com u can wear them in the pool and if i were you i would were board shorts but thats just me you put it in before you go swiming and if oyu can try using a few tonight so you can have the hang of it take it out 2-4 hours after you put it in.
I hope i helped best of luck

Questions About How To Insert A Tampon

Laura asks…

How to insert tampon at school without mirror?

I'm 14, and just put my first tampon in a little while ago, with a mirror. How exactly can I put on in without a mirror? And how to I reach down to move the string out of the way when I pee, without peeing on my hand?

admin answers:

Just don't use tampons at school until you feel confident putting them in. As for the string... It dries quite fast even if you wee on it. You can hold it forward, then only a tiny bit of it gets wet and your hand stays dry...

Compact mirror is a good idea, as long as you don't drop it in the loo!

Mark asks…

I know how to insert tampons, but after 2-3 hours, my tampon comes out. Any suggestions?

I've been using tampons for nearly 7 years, and they don't seem to want to stay in. I know how to use a tampon and I have tried multiple brands and I can't get to seem to get one to "stick" for more than a few hours. Usually, it is just a waste.

admin answers:

You need to put it in higher up. The base of the tampon should be a half inch from the opening. You can try using a larger size. Doing keggles can help you build muscles in that area and tighten it.

John asks…

How and where to insert tampon?

i already know u insert it in the vagina, but where the heck is it??ive had my period for a year and a half and hav only used pads, but i dont want to anymore. so if u could help plzzz. ive already think i found where to put it and all but whn i try, it doesnt slip in like anyone says, like im afraid ill tear sumthing im not supposed to! ???dumb i know but plzz

admin answers:

You have two holes down there...your butthole and then your vagina...obviously its not in the butt. Hold the applicator with the fat part where the tampon is right at the rim of the hole, with your thumb and middle finger hold the rim right about that, and put your index finger on the top so you can use that finger to push it in. With your thumb and middle finger push the actual applicator into your vagina until your thumb tip touches your area, then use ur index finger and push down on the applicator so the cotton tampon goes inside you. Then just pull out the plastic or cardboard applicator (depending on what brand you use) and throw it out. You'll see the string..you wont tear anything, and youll just see the string hanging out. Have fun

Sharon asks…

How do I insert tampon?

I've spent 1 hour trying to figure out how to insert a tampon. I can't find the right hole and whenever I try pushing it in it hurts, it just doesn't feel right. can someone help please?
I'm serious!
Forgot to add that I have swimming at school tomorrow and it's compulsory. And I definitely don't want to use a pad.
Drubbin go F*CK urself.

admin answers:

First, get lite/slimmer tampons or the ones with a really slick applicator, like tampax pearl. You need to be relaxed to insert a tampon. Try practice inserting one after taking a shower, when all your muscles are relaxed. Or you could try putting one foot on the bath tub or toilet. If you have trouble finding your spot, place a mirror on the floor and squat over it. Hold the tampon at the middle of the applicator, where the ridges are at, and slide it up until your fingers touch your body. It should not hurt, nor should you feel it. If you do, then it's not far enough in.

William asks…

FOR WOMEN ONLY: How do I insert a tampon correctly?

I’ve always used pads, but recently I decided to switch to tampons. I have read the insertion instructions on the box and read tampon insertion tips at http://www.beinggirl.com/en_US/pages/goods_tampinsert.jsp , but my attempts at it have failed; I find it painful, and am unable to insert it fully (it’s also very hard to get the partially-inserted tampon out).

I am worried about the tampon breaking my hymen, and am unable to relax. If it makes any difference, I am petite (5'1") and am using Playtex Gentle Glide Regular (I tried using two samples of what I think were Tampax Pearl yesterday, and had the same problem).

Can someone please give me any good tips about inserting a tampon fully and painlessly? (Should I use some sort of lubricant? What kind? What are some ways to make yourself relax?)
I tried lubricating a tampon with lotion, but it still hurt like hell.

admin answers:

Breathe. I recently inserted a tampon for the first time, and I was totally stressed so it hurt like fuck. Try to relax your muscles. I assume you're a virgin if you're worried about breaking your hymen. Tip the tampon back at an angle, and slowly glide it in. Tell yourself you can just take it out if it starts to hurt. Good luck!

Questions About How To Insert A Tampon For The First Time

Mandy asks…

Postition for inserting Tampon? FIRST TIME? HELP!?

SO this is going to be kind of gross....

So I used a mirror to look at my vagina,,,kind of for the first time...during my period,,,

I got freaked out because when I found the hole, it looked like it was covered! So I was like, okay, its my hymen? But There looked like there was NO WHERE for a tampon!

Then I tried looking again later,,,

THIS IS GROSS .... but...

Blood started coming out and I was like OH! THERES the hole!

but it looked really small like a tampon wouldn't fit :S

Anyways, thats the info heres the questions:

1) What position works for you to insert a tampon? AND, when in the position which way must you aim the tampon?

2) Ive read about people syaing things like "sit on the floor" or "sit on your bed" But hoe am I possibl supposed to do that, I mean, blood is like, dripping out, right!? I dont want that EVERYWHERE? How does that make sense? I only sit on the toilet, that way if it drips, it goes in the bowl- no problem...? :S

3) It says to put the applicator in until your fingers touch your body, but I want to make sure that it goes in all the way so that I dont have to take it out if I mess up becasue ive heard that that can hurt! So would it eb terrible to go a little more further? like push it a bit more?

4) When the tampon is situated in place, what part do you pull to remove the applicator and "pusher"? Because if the applicator is too far in, would it work to just pull the tip of the pusher?

5) Has this ever hapened: (Im thinking of all these crazy possibliites cus tis my first time and im nervous) : You put the tampon in, then went to pull out the applicator and pusher but teh tampon came out too? Is that possible? What do i do if that happens?

6) When the tampon is in, if I look in my vagina, shoudl i be bale to see the braided part (on Tampax Lites) ?

admin answers:

Girrrrl, one day it's going to be so easy for you and you're going to be kind of embarrassed at how much you freaked out. Ah well, everyone had their moment.

1) When I do it, I like to stand with my legs spread a bit. Sitting on the toilet works for me too. I hear people say to aim towards your back, and maybe that works, I don't know. But you'll be able to feel it if you were pushing in the wrong direction, so just move it around until it will move forward. Imagine you'd never stuck your finger in your ear before and you didn't have a mirror. You'd still be able to put your finger in your ear, because you'd be able to feel which way to go. By that logic, maybe you should feel inside yourself to know which direction your vagina goes.

2) The sit on the floor thing is ridiculous. Just stand, and wipe yourself off first so you don't drip.

3) Lol push it in as far as you want, it really doesn't matter unless you're uncomfortable.

4) There are directions in the box, but try playing around with a tampon before you actually put it in to figure out how it works. As far as I know, it only works if you use it like the directions say to. But you just pull the outer tube and the inner thing comes with it.

5) Only if you don't push the tampon all the way out of the applicator. And if that happens, throw the tampon out and try again silly girl!

6) The entire tampon part should be inside you, all you should be able to see is the string. If you can see more than that, pull the tampon out and try again, or just use your finger to push it in further.

Just relax about it, it's really not such a big deal. And if you can't get it in, it's likely that you're too nervous and your pelvic muscles are too tightened. ALSO, stop imagining crazy things that can happen, if anything goes wrong you can just take the tampon out and try again.
Anyway, good luck =)

Ruth asks…

What do you do when you insert a tampon for the first time?

I'm really nervous about putting a tampon in... I sort of know how but I'm scared it won't work or something or it will really hurt. No one in my family has ever worn a tampon so I don't know who to turn to. Can some1 give me advice as to how to put it in and stuff to make it easier??

admin answers:

There are very specific instructions with pictures on the instructions in the box.

Steven asks…

admin answers:

Richard asks…

How do I insert a tampon for the first time?(Girls Only)?

OK, so I am 14 years old and just started my period! My mom is at work tonight and it's only my dad home for the time being. Well it's a very heavy flow and I just looked for pads and can't find any! But my mom has some tampons for when I wanted to try one for the first time. So for now I'm using panty liners! I need help fast! Anyone out there who can give me a clear explanation?

admin answers:

Are the directions still in the box? Try looking for those. If you aren't sure about using a tampon now, tell your dad you need to go to the store and get some pads. He'll understand.

You should leave the blood there (don't wipe) to help lubricate putting it in. Find a comfortable position. Try squating over the toilet or standing with one foot on the toilet or on the edge of the bathtub. Hold the tampon with your thumb and finger on the finger grips (at the bottom of the top tube of the applicator). Push the applicator inside until your fingers are touching your body. Then push the bottom tube of the applicator in to push the tampon in. Push it as far in as you can. Remove the applicator and throw it away. If you can feel it and it hurts, it probably isn't in far enough. Use a finger to push it in as far as you can. It can't go too far, so don't worry about that. Be sure the string is hanging outside your body. You probably will feel it a bit since it is your first time using them. Remember you have to take it out after about 6 hours. Don't leave it in for more than 8 hours to help prevent TSS, but don't worry if it is like 8 and a half hours. It takes much longer than that to get TSS. Use the smallest absorbency you can. Start with the smallest you have. If it fills up quickly and begins to leak, try moving up to the next one. You probably should wear a panty liner with it just in case you leak.

Good luck. Remember, you dad can help you. So if you have trouble, just ask him for pads. He may not have a period, but he's helped your mom deal with hers for years.

James asks…

How easy is it to insert a tampon for the very first time?

I imagine it would help if you were already masturbating so that you were familiar with your anatomy.

I think I know why you're asking. Maybe you have a young girlfriend and you're asking for her.

I am talking now of personal experience.

I started masturbating as a child, many years before my period started. When I got my period, I discoverd it while I was masturbating....
.... That was very disgusting....
Just as a proof that many girls also masturbate at a young age.

If a girl masturbates, she knows her body better than a girl that doesn't. I heard many questions like "where to put the tampon" - this is just weird. I also just read a question about that here.... And I answered this girl that she should masturbate to learn more about her body.

But really, using a tampon has nothing to do with masturbation itself. Using a tampon has in general no pleasing factor. It's not really great to use tampons, you just have to.

The first time, it could hurt a little, but the girl should carefully read the instructions in the box of the tampons.
Then it will be alright.
