Questions About How To Get Rid Of Fleas On Dogs

Steven asks…

I can not get rid of my dogs fleas he has had 2 treatments of advantix with no success he is a maltese?

I am stumped on how to get rid of his fleas he is an indoor dog and i also have an indoor cat who is also being treated he is itching so bad and i just want them to go away any suggestions?

admin answers:

A flea's life cycle is 21 days and every 21 days new ones hatch. If you are not killing the fleas in your carpets, furniture, bedding (yours and the dogs) and absolutely everywhere else, you will have trouble getting rid of them. It pays to spray your yard because your dog probably does go out for walks and to go to the bathroom and will pick up new ones. Call your vets office and ask for suggestions of what to use and if you should change medicine or just give it some more time. I know my vet's office is happy to give such advice for free on the phone. Good luck getting rid of those pesky little critters!

Sandy asks…

Is there any natural way to get rid of fleas on dogs?

First off, we've tried Frontline, and it does work, but if you have to wash up after using or face health risks, how is that good for the dog? Leave your big company, pesticide propaganda BS at the door. I want a NATURAL way to get rid of fleas, and proof to back it up.

I've heard that small amounts of garlic in their food daily help, and that Dawn dish soap does too.

admin answers:

Garlic is questioned now as a cause of anemia, similar to onions. They don't know how much garlic would cause it at this point, but it is being recommended that you avoid supplimenting garlic until that amount can be qualified.

I have been reading up on apple cidar vinegar as a flea repellent. I have a cat who has reactions to flea preventative and we are trying to find other ways to prevent.

Does your dog have fleas now? If he/she does, I would recommend giving the dog a dose of frontline, treating the house, and then begin using apple cidar vinegar or other natural remedy. That way, you're not fighting an infestation on top of it. If your dog doesn't have fleas, then start the natural remedies. However, it can take up to six weeks to start working.

Lizzie asks…

Ok I have tried EVERYTHING. How do I get rid of my dogs fleas?

We live on basically sand. They call our town the Island because it literally used to be one. Anyways. My dog has fleas. We have tried numerous shampoos, powdered the carpets, vacuum etc. But they keep coming back. My skin is sensitive so I get very irritated when the fleas bite me and I am pregnant and don't want to bring a newborn into a house with fleas. Is there something I'm missing here? Thanks!

admin answers:

Take your dog to a groomer for a professional flea dip and bath. In the meantime, consult your vet about preventative flea and tick medications, like Frontline and Advantix

Ken asks…

How do you get rid of dog fleas?

I gave them a bath to wash off all the fleas. 2 days later, I gave them Frontline Advantage - that was 1 week ago and the fleas went away after a couple days. Then came back. I was told to give them a bath with Dawn liquid soap. That helped for 2 days... and they are back again. They are mostly indoor dogs and only go outside for the bathroom. The fleas are so bad, the dogs are chewing on themselves and biting off their fur. The Frontline Advantage is suppose to work for 30 days... Can I give it to the dogs again even though it's only been a week and a half? Is there something out there that works better? HELP! I've never had this problem before.

admin answers:

I would think the bath in Dawn dish soap reduced the efficacy of the Advantage - if you read the small print in the instructions, I think it says that bathing with 'emollients' (dish soap) reduces the efficacy of the product. Also, dish soap only washes fleas off - once the animal is dry, the ones that have been waiting in your carpet just hop right back on! It is not a preventative treatment.

Since you have a bad flea problem, you need to treat your animal and your house, as fleas will be present in both (their lifecycle is to live both on the animal and in the environment, visiting the animal for blood meals - they also lay eggs in the environment). I would advise switching to Frontline, this is the top product. It will be safe to use already - Frontline, Advantage and Revolution are very hard to overdose on, unlike store-bought flea products.

Treat your dog regularly with Frontline spot-on - that is, once a month. Also spray your house with a product from your vets - you may need to spray twice, as the spray may not kill the flea eggs and pupae, so you'll have to wait for these to hatch before you can kill them with a second spraying, a couple of days later.

Once you have rid your animal and the environment from fleas, use of Frontline Plus every 6 weeks on your animal will keep both the animal and the environment flea-free by killing the eggs as well as the adult fleas.

Mark asks…

How do I get rid of fleas on my dogs and in my house?

I have two chihuahuas and this is the first time either of them has had fleas. I just noticed them about a week or two ago. I haven't seen them around the house but you can never be too sure because the dogs go almost everywhere in the house. What is the most effective way to get my dogs flea free. What is the most recommended flea repellent and what can I do to get them out of my house if they are in here which they probably are?

admin answers:

I prefer natural flea tick and mosquito remedies. There is a natural alternative to the harsh and harmful chemical based flea and tick repellents. NATURAL FLEA, TICK AND MOSQUITO REMEDY FOR DOGS kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to four weeks, yet it’s safe to use on your dog and around your family. It uses the natural power of essential oils which are well known for their highly effective defense mechanisms against potentially harmful insects. One bottle lasts you up to 9 months.
There is another great product called DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FOR FLEA AND TICK CONTROL ON PETS. Diatomaceous Earth for Flea and Tick Control is natural, nontoxic, totally organic and safe with no harm to the environment, pets or to people.
Diatomaceous Earth is an all-natural flea control remedy that works to dehydrate adult fleas. When applied to the animal's environment, as well as the animal itself, it is as effective as chemical alternatives. Diatomaceous Earth is the fossilized remains of a type of hard-shelled algae called diatoms. While Diatomaceous Earth is generally safe for humans and animals, it is lethal when it comes to insects. Its sharp edges cut into the waxy outer layer of fleas, ticks and other insects causing them to dehydrate and eventually die. DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FOR FLEA AND TICK CONTROL ON PETS is also very effective against any type of worms, lice, mites and other pests.

Questions About How To Get Rid Of Fleas On Kittens

David asks…

How can you get rid of fleas on kittens?

2 week old kittens have small infestation of fleas. Dont want to use a shampoo. How can i get the fleas off of them?

admin answers:

Hi there...here's the answer by "A Veterinarian" on how to treat fleas in young kittens:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmECPVt0.2f5B7KC5WN8qxvsy6IX?qid=20061017065114AAGxJeo

I have found that the most effective and SAFEST thing to use for kittens that age is a product called Capstar, at a dosage of 1/2 of a 'blue' tablet (it's really white, but called blue b/c of the packaging...the other size is 'green') every 2-3 days until the kitten is old enough to use the more long-term products. (And when you do get the longer-acting products, DO NOT use the OTC one from the company that starts with an H and ends with a Z....or any of the other OTC's for that matter....unless you want your kitten to have seizures and die. We are baffled as to why those products are even still on the market.) Capstar is available from your veterinarian...just give them a call.

Some sprays are labelled for use for kittens over 6-8 weeks of age, but have to be applied every few days, too. Trust me...the Capstar is a much better option. There are many little tricks, but cats/kittens HATE the sprays, and will often drool for hours after application.

Don't bother bathing the kitten, except to remove flea 'dirt' (flea poop)....if you do that, don't panic if the water turns reddish, as flea excrement is nothing more than your kitten's blood that has been sucked out by the fleas and passed through their digestive system. Even the 'best' flea shampoo available through DVMs will only kill the fleas on the pet while wet with the shampoo....that's why I don't even sell 'flea shampoo' any more. It's a waste of time, effort, and money. Once dry, new fleas will get right back on if you are not treating your house concurrently (which takes time.) Same thing for Dawn/Joy dishwashing detergent....they kill the fleas GREAT (just DON'T get it in their eyes, and don't use it more than once, b/c it strips out the oil glands in their skin).....but once dry, there is no residual effect. If you do decide to bathe the kitten for some reason, make sure the gums and tongue are nice and pink. If they are pale (or white!), a bath (even with just plain water) can kill the kitten.

Your only other option is to make like a little monkey and sit there manually picking them all off one at a time.

Please call your DVM about the Capstar. It doesn't take many fleas to suck out enough blood to kill a little kitten like that. (Plus, they cause tapeworms.) The blue Capstar is labelled for kittens of any age, 2# of body weight or more. Your kitten is probably not quite that big yet, but I have treated hundreds of kittens less than a pound with the 1/2 dosage (saving many of their lives in the process.) It is INCREDIBLY SAFE. If you put the kitten in a box or carrier with a white towel after treatment, you will see it covered with dead/dying fleas within 30 minutes to an hour or so. I was a skeptic at first, but have been amazed at its safety and effectiveness. (We automatically give it to all my surgery patients the minute they walk in the door...because 1. We don't want them bringing fleas into the clinic to get on other pets, and 2. It's not exactly sterile to have a flea jump into the open abdomen incision in the middle of surgery.) It supposedly 'lasts' only 24 hours by label, but I have found that it really does a pretty good job for up to 2-3 days. It's safe enough to give every single day if you have to, however. I have also found that the 1/2 pill is quite effective for up to 5-8 pounds of body weight, even though anything over 2# is 'supposed' to get a whole pill. Just make sure to put the other 1/2 back into the little foil 'bubble' and tape it closed with cellophane tape until ready to use it. The longer it's exposed to air, etc. After being opened and cut in half, the less effective it will be.

(No, I don't work for the company that makes Capstar, lol. I just know for a fact that it's a great product. I only wish they'd come up with a slow-release version of it that would last for weeks or a month. I've never had a single case of toxicity....nor seen a single side effect.)

I'm a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with 20 years exp in private practice (27 total years in the profession.)

Chris asks…

How to get rid of fleas On kittens?

My cat caught fleas and gave them to her 4/5 week old kittens I wouldve gone to the vets but it's bank holiday I've heard about Dawn dish soap but I got no idea wat that is so yea how to get rid of them? Cheers

admin answers:

Ok, for the mother cat you could use a flea collar or if u want to use a flea product i would suggest you to use Frontline and Advantage brands.frontline is the choice of veterinarians when it comes to combating both fleas and ticks. Frontilne is proven protection. Frontline Plus killed 100% of fleas within 12 hours of application.
It is long lasting and continues to kill fleas and ticks all month long. It is also approved for use on puppies and kittens 8 weeks of age and older and on breeding, pregnant or lactating cats and dogs and is waterproof: effective even after swimming, bathing and grooming.
Also, the Advantage brand for fleas in cats is very effective and safe and kills fleas fast .it has been used by vets ans is EPA and FDA Approved.

For the kittens , the safest way to treat kittens under 6 weeks of age for fleas is to bathe him using warm water and Dawn dishwashing detergent and then to manually pick off remaining fleas. Dawn dishwashing soap is very effective and it kills fleas quickly. Many breeders bathe their cats in Dawn.
Bath the kittens one by one .Fill your sink or tub with warm water. (Test the temperature as if you were giving a baby a bath). Using the kitchen/bathroom sink is often easiest as you don't have to bend down and you are more in control. Immerse the kitten up to the kitten's neck and insure that he/her is saturated. Wet his/her face and head with a face washer. Then lift him/her out and place him/her on a towel. Gently massage in the Dawn detergent. Massage the soap all over his/her body and around his/her neck, ears, face, head and under his/her chin, being very careful not to get soap in his/her eyes. The fleas are not silly and will head for the high dry ground of the head area.
Then put him/her back in the water for a rinse. If he/she is not fighting and struggling too much try to keep his/her body submerged (with his /her head above the water of course) for a few minutes. If he /she is clawing you, get the job over and done with as quickly as possible.

Having two people perform the operation is often easier. One to hold the kitten and one to massage and wash the the kitten. When finished wrap him/her up in a dry towel and dry him/her off. Try to do this in a warm atmosphere and don't let him/her get cold.

Do comb the kittens after bathing them .

You could also buy a natural flea spray from petsmart that you could use on both the mother cat and her kittens.

Good luck
i starred:)

Richard asks…

How can you get rid of fleas on kittens that are only 4 weeks old?

I would also like to know how I can make my kittens become more domestic. They were wild cats and found them with no mother. Thank you for your responses.

admin answers:

OK first Here is capstar:Treats flea infestations on pets. Starts killing adult fleas on the pet within 30 minutes. One dose lasts 24 hours. For pets over four weeks of age. Next, Program: Flavor Tabs for cats and kittens 4 weeks of age or older.

When Abbie was a baby we had to use the spray from the vet and we sprayed it on a damp towel then wrapped her in it for 1/2 and hour per the vet's instruction.

Also vacuum all rooms once a day and empty the bag into a zip lock bag and throw away after each use.

I was told all animals needed to be treated so thats what we did.

Hope this helps.

George asks…

how can you get rid of fleas on kittens 8 days old?

my cat had kittens 8 days ago and they have fleas. i don't want them to die. please help me!!!

admin answers:

Fleas on kittens can be life threatening so you absolutly need to get rid of them on the kittens and the mother.I would suggest that you consult a vet. Bathing a kitten that young could make them sick because they need to stay warm and also flea products can be unsafe for a kitten under 8 weeks old!!! If you call your vet I'm sure they would give you advice right over the phone. GOOD LUCK!!!

Lisa asks…

How can I get rid of fleas on young kittens?

i just rescued to kittens, im not sure how old they are, maybe about 6 weeks. I have them in my garage right now but it's getting cold and I want to bring them in the house. They are covered in fleas and I don't want them to get to my dog. Iwasn't sure how to get rid of them, I read somewhere that shampoos can be toxic to kittens. How can I get rid of all the fleas?
thanks for all the answers! I want to try something rather quickly so they don't freeze in the garage and I don't know how soon I can get them to the vet.
Thanks everyone for your help. I used the dawn dish soap and it worked really well. I didn't get all the fleas since I didn't have a small enough comb but most of them came off, and boy were there ALOT! So tomorrow I will get one of those combs and get the rest and make an appointment with the vet. By the way, now that I got a closer look, I have a little boy kitty and a little girl kitty!

admin answers:

How many fleas are we talking here? Is it something you can comb out with a fine tooth comb? (comb and put it in a bag and pop their heads to kill them).

You could try washing them with some soapy water but you might get very scratched up.

Questions About How To Get Rid Of Fleas On Humans

Chris asks…

Can humans get fleas? How do you get rid of them?

My sister has three dogs, and allows the one to sleep in bed with her daughter. Today my neice was sent home from school because the teacher said she has fleas.

She was at my house all day but didn't lay on couches or anything. I'm so worried that I might get fleas! We have no pets here and I didn't really hug her or get too close to her.

How do you get rid of fleas from humans and how should I de-flea my house so no one here will catch it?

admin answers:

They might mean lice not fleas. If your neice was at your house than chances are you might have it as well. Make sure you have it first than just go to Wal Mart pick up a bottle of Nix, follow instructions, vacuum, wash all fabrics that she came into contact with & freeze the non washable fabrics for 72 hours (like pillows & stuffed toys). I know this sounds hard but believe me it's worth it! You don't want to let the lice spread so get rid of it now, make sure that anyone she has come into contact with knows about the lice & treats it or it could come back to you. Sorry!!!

Steven asks…

how to get rid of fleas on humans?

My friend just told me that there are fleas all over her house.
I think they came from a dog but they're biting her and her family.
How do you get rid of fleas when they get on humans?
Also, how do you prevent it.

admin answers:

The dog needs medicine to get rid of the fleas. GO TO THE VET FOR THE DOG! GO TO THE DOCTOR FOR THE HUMANES!

That's all I know! :-)

David asks…

How do I get rid of fleas on humans and cats?

I brought in a new stray cat, but it had fleas. I used the stuff you can get at Walmart to kill them, but it doesn't seem to have worked at all. Now my other two cats scratch and I'm paranoid that I may have fleas too whenever my head itches, because the cat sometimes sleep near my head. Would it be blatantly obvious that I had fleas? Like CONSTANTLY scratching, or is it something I could not really notice? I've never seen any small black things crawling across my head but sometimes I feel like things are crawling on my head; though I think it might also be psychosomatic since I'm WORRIED about there being things crawling on my head.

So in conclusion;
1. is there any better product I can buy to kill the fleas on the cats?
2. Could I have fleas and fleas just aren't bothersome enough for me to be sure?
3. If I do have fleas, what kind of product would I have to use.

Ugh.
fleas are gross.
haha.

Maybe u should get a flea collar

Richard asks…

How to get rid of human fleas in your house?

I had a tea cup Chihuahua a few weeks ago. We got rid of her because of potty problems. Before she left, she got into my bed and slept in it when I wasn't there. She got fleas and flea eggs in it. I slept in it, not knowing until the next morning. I cleaned it up and thought everything was fine. A week later, the house was infested with fleas. You couldn't walk in my room without a flea jumping on you and biting you. I have flea bites all over my feet and legs and so does my brothers and sisters. We cant sleep in our rooms anymore because of the fleas. My mom washes our blanket like 5 times a day and nothing works. And then we still get bitten. This morning, the fleas were in our hair. So we used lise remover and it worked. My mother is going get some things to clean the house with. But we are trying to avoid bombing the house because we are moving out in 1 week. I need help with this problem ASAP! Please.

FLEAS! How do I get rid of them on HUMANS?

So I have fleas and I know for sure that is what they are. How can I get rid of them. Everything I've found is only safe for pets. My cat is being treated but I am still dealing with them and I don't know how to get rid of them. Please help!
They are living in my hair. I have really really thick long hair. I have their eggs in my hair and I've seen them and they are fleas.

admin answers:

You don't have them, though you could be getting them on you and being bit by them.

One thing i have found out from a vet tech friend who had flea issues with her dog when she was pregnant.....those flea washes the sell for pets are unnessessary. All you need to do is wash them in a tub with dish soap. Fleas can usually, for lack of a better explination, walk on the water and not get washed away and drowned but just water just due to the surface tention of water. Dish soap reduces the surface tention of water so that they cant excape the bath and will drowned. (Is why the person suggesting bowls of water under a nightlight said soapy water....it would have to be soapy to drown them).

If you are really thinking you have them, then take a bath yourself with dish soap, but really, you can not have them. You just most likely have them in your carpet, and on your furniture, possibly even your bed....and possibly in your clothes as well.
