Questions About How To Cook Spaghetti Squash

Robert asks…

Does anyone know how long to cook a spaghetti squash?

Hi, I'm cooking spaghetti squash for the first time and I have no idea how long to cook it in the oven. I've called both my grandma and mom and they said that it's 350 degrees in the oven, but neither one could remember for how long...They both told me that I'd know because it'd just peel apart, but I don't want to be checking every 5 minutes to see if it's done. A round about time would be awesome!

Thanks!

I'm sure this is way more info than you need but I found it interesting - good luck!

Averaging from 4 to 8 pounds, the cylinder shaped spaghetti squash is generally available year-round with a peak season from early fall through winter. While a true spaghetti squash is pale ivory to pale yellow in color, in the early 1990's, an orange spaghetti squash, known as "Orangetti" was developed and this is what is frequently found in today's supermarkets. Higher in beta carotene, the orange variety is also bit sweeter than its paler counterpart, although both have a mild flavor that is easily enhanced by the food served with or on it. A dieter's dream, a four-ounce serving of spaghetti squash has only 37 calories.

Buying & Storing
When buying spaghetti squash, look for hard fruit that is heavy for its size, about eight to nine inches in length and four to five inches in diameter and with a pale even color. Avoid any squash with soft spots and green color is a sign of immaturity. The average four-pound spaghetti squash will yield about five cups.

Spaghetti Squash can be stored at room temperature for about a month. After cutting, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 2 days. Spaghetti squash also freezes well. Pack cooked squash into freezer bags, seal, label and freeze. Partially thaw before re-using, then steam until tender but still firm, about 5 minutes.

How To Cook Spaghetti Squash

Bake It -- Pierce the whole shell several times with a large fork or skewer and place in baking dish. Cook squash in preheated 375°F oven approximately 1 hour or until flesh is tender.
Boil It -- Heat a pot of water large enough to hold the whole squash. When the water is boiling, drop in the squash and cook for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on its size. When a fork goes easily into the flesh, the squash is done.
Microwave It -- Cut squash in half lengthwise; remove seeds. Place squash cut sides up in a microwave dish with 1/4 cup water. Cover with plastic wrap and cook on high for 10 to 12 minutes, depending on size of squash. Add more cooking time if necessary. Let stand covered, for 5 minutes. With fork "comb" out the strands.

How long do I cook spaghetti squash?

If I cut a 5 lb spaghetti squash it in half, and bake it at 375, how long should I cook it for? Is it possible to over-cook it, or is more tender better?

admin answers:

I usually bake it in the oven at 375 for about an hour, but just keep a close eye on it and it should be fine. :) There's really no way to overcook it, unless you keep it in there for a veeeery long time and you could always throw it back in if it's not done yet.

Good luck & Merry Christmas!

STUFFED SPAGHETTI SQUASH

1 spaghetti squash (1 1/2 lbs.)
2 tsp. Olive oil
1/2 c. Diced onion and red pepper
1 garlic clove
8 oz. Ground veal, or any meat
1 c. Canned whole tomatoes, chopped
1/4 tsp. Oregano
Dash salt and pepper
2 oz. Shredded Mozzarella or Cheddar cheese
1 tbsp. Chopped Italian parsley

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Using fork pierce squash; place whole squash on baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Reduce to 350 degrees.
Cut squash in half lengthwise, remove and discard seeds. Scoop out pulp, reserve shells. Set both aside.

In skillet heat oil, add onion, red pepper and garlic. Saute until onion is translucent. Stir in ground meat, saute until meat is no longer pink, add tomatoes, seasonings and reserved squash pulp and cook, stir occasionally until liquid is absorbed. Spoon half of mixture into a shell.

Place shells in baking dish(s) and bake 20 minutes. Sprinkle cheese on each one and then broil until melted and browned. Serve with sprinkled parsley.

Makes 2 servings.

SPAGHETTI: SQUASH WITH TOMATOES,
BASIL, AND PARMESAN

3 lb. Spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise, reserving one half for another use, and the seeds discarded
2 tbsp. Olive oil
1/4 c. Shredded fresh basil leaves plus additional for garnish
1/4 tsp. Dried oregano
3 tbsp. Freshly grated Parmesan
1 c. Thinly sliced cherry tomatoes

In a glass baking dish arrange the squash half, cut side down, pour 1/4 cup water around it, and cover this dish tightly with microwave-safe plastic wrap. Microwave the squash at high powder (100 percent) for 12 minutes, or until it is soft when pressed, and let it stand, covered, for 3 minutes. In a large bowl whisk together the oil, 1/4 cup basil, oregano, and 27 of the Parmesan, stir in the tomatoes, and season the mixture with salt and pepper.
While the squash is still warm scrape it with a fork to form strands, add the strands to the tomato mixture and toss the mixture until it is combined. Divide the mixture between two bowls, sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon Parmesan over it, and garnish with the additional basil.

Hope these help. Enjoy.
