Questions About How To Cook Rice In The Microwave

James asks…

Can you cook rice in a microwave?

I know it's not the best way to do it but I'm not a brilliant cook and want something quicker and easier to clean.

Is it safe to eat microwaved rice and if so how do i got about cooking it?

Thanks =]

It's perfectly safe to eat microwaved rice.

If you want to make really good rice, don't use converted rice, i.e. Minute Rice, it pales in comparrison to the real thing. Buy Jasmine or Basmati rice. Jasmine and Basmati are not brand names, they are types of long grain rice. They can be found in almost any grocery store. Read the front of the bag before you buy it. If the bag says "converted" put it back on the shelf.

Use two measures of water to one measure of uncooked rice. For example... Use two cups of water for one cup of rice, or four cups of water for two cups of rice.

The key to making really good rice is to rinse excess starch from the rice before cooking it. If you do not, you will end up with sticky, gummy rice every time. Don't rinse the whole bag of rice, just rinse what you plan to cook. If you have a fine mesh strainer, it works best. If not, just put the rice in a bowl, add water, stir the rice with your hand. The water will become cloudy from the starch. Dump the water, and repeat until the water is no longer cloudy.

The method below will work for 1-2 cups of rice. Any more than that, and you may need to increase the cooking time:

1. Add the rice and the water in a microwave safe bowl
2. Cook on high for 10 minutes
3. If water is not all absorbed, cook anther two minutes, or so
4. Fluff rice with a fork
5. Cover the bowl with a microwave safe plate
6. Cook on high for 3 minutes or until all the water is absorbed
7. Fluff again and serve
8. If you want butter and salt, add it now. I prefer my rice plain.

Is there a simple way to cook rice?

(white rice)

I don't have a rice cooker and often times, I've noticed people overcook or their rice is soggy when they cook it in the microwave. How do you make it?

admin answers:

Combine one cup rice and two cups of water in a saucepot and bring to a boil. Clap a lid on it and turn the heat down to Low. If you’re using a gas stove, that’s a little wispy flame. If you’re using an electric stove, that’s like 2 clicks from Off.

Here’s the hardest part: resist the urge to lift the lid for 15 minutes.

Taste a forkful; it should be tender and there should be a wee bit of water remaining in the bottom of the pot. Replace the lid and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the rice to sit (with the lid on it) on the burner until ready to serve.

How to cook rice, dal and vegetable in microwave?

I have lg 26 ltr microwave+convection oven. yesterday i tried to cook rice and dal in it using plastic steamer bowl (provided with oven) but some of the water and rice comes out of bowl. same with the dal. pls. guide

admin answers:

NEVER use plastic utensiles in the microwave. Plastic MELTS.

For rice in a DEEP glass dish for each cup of rice put two cups of water and cook on high(for 900 power) for 8/10mts.

The golden rule is a very deep dish so that the liquid does not overflow when it boils.

Remember even microwaveable plastic is only to be used to REHEAT food for a miximum of 3/4 mts. NEVER to cook in.

By deep pyrex or corningware bowls with lids and they will be useful even for the baking you do in the oven.

Good Luck.

PS: I SUCCESSFULLY cook even chicken and fish in the microwave don't get discouraged by the answer above mine.
